G-DIXY with 40kts at 2500ft
Many of my students will recognise this ‘sortie’ as it is one of my IRR Revalidation/Renewal favourites. Depart Fowlmere and intercept BKY 320 Radial, climbing to 2500 QNH at 15 DME route direct CIT for the ‘alternative’ procedure (Track outbound 032 to 8.6 I-CR DME) then right turn to intercept Localiser and then Glideslope down to our calculated Decision Altitude.
This short video highlights how demanding this can be, especially with 40kts of wind from a Southerly direction. Not something to be recommended for Revalidations but useful experience! TJ here has a good stab at keeping it all together.
This flight in G-DIXY (Archer III) some years ago when she was fitted with KLN89B GPS which does not give any pictorial situational awareness so a good effort by TJ. The conditions were representative of a winter day in the UK with rain, drizzle, the strong gusty wind, a cloud base around 900ft above the runway and visibility around 3-4km. So all within the scope of an IRR Pilot in theory but not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’!
Do call for a refresher trip…
